Compare the BWT Aquameter and Bestmax Premium water filter cartridge for espresso machines. Learn which option suits your setup and when to consider the Bestaroma tank filter.
Quick answer
Choose the BWT Bestmax Premium cartridge for plumbed-in espresso machines that need consistent mineral balance and scale protection. Pair it with the BWT Aquameter to track filter life accurately. For tank-fed machines, the BWT Bestaroma Premium is the correct drop-in filter.
Plumbed vs. tank-fed machines
The main difference between these BWT products comes down to your espresso machine's water supply. The Bestmax Premium cartridge is designed for plumbed-in installations where water flows under pressure through the filter. The Bestaroma Premium, on the other hand, sits directly inside the water tank and works without pressure, using the tank-in-tank principle common in many home and commercial machines.
If your machine is not plumbed in, the Bestmax cartridge won't work because it requires pressure. Similarly, the Aquameter is a flow meter that needs to be installed inline, so it's only useful for plumbed setups.
Why you might want both the Aquameter and a cartridge
The BWT Aquameter is not a filter itself—it's a programmable flow meter that records the litres passing through your system. When paired with a Bestmax Premium cartridge, it gives you a precise indication of when the filter needs replacing, rather than relying on a calendar or guesswork.
Using the Aquameter can help you get the full capacity out of your Bestmax cartridge and avoid replacing it too early or too late. This is especially useful in busy environments where water usage varies.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Bestmax Premium cartridge (plumbed): Provides mineral balance and scale protection for plumbed espresso machines. Requires inline installation and pressure to function. Not compatible with tank-fed machines.
- Aquameter (plumbed): A programmable flow meter that tracks litres through your filter. Helps you replace the Bestmax cartridge at the right time based on actual usage, not a fixed schedule. Pairing the Aquameter with a Bestmax cartridge gives you precise filter life management.
- Bestaroma Premium cartridge (tank): A drop-in filter for machines with a water tank using the tank-in-tank system. No pressure required. Not suitable for plumbed installations and does not replace the Bestmax in those setups.
Product facts
- BWT Aquameter with Display: The BWT Aquameter records the litres that pass through it and is a visual aid to tell you when your water filter needs replacing. Instead of guessing filter life by time, you get a reliable measure based on actual water usage, maximising filter capacity and ensuring timely changes.
BWT Aquameter with Display - BWT Bestmax Premium size 'M' Cartridge: When coffee or tea tastes flat or flavourless, an imbalance of minerals in the water can be responsible. The Bestmax Premium cartridge corrects mineral imbalance, which is essential for consistent espresso flavour and protecting your machine from scale.
BWT Bestmax Premium size 'M' Cartridge - BWT bestaroma Premium Water Tank Filter Cartridge: The BWT Bestaroma Premium fits in the standardised intakes of water tanks using the tank-in-tank principle, with no pressure used for filtration. This makes it the correct choice for machines that aren't plumbed in, as it requires no pressure and installs directly into the tank.
